If you listen to a crying baby, you realize they can cry all day and never hurt their voices. It isn't physical maturity but emotional maturity and their ability to focus during the lesson that determines their readiness. I've had private students as young as 5 years old and they've done very well with lessons. I've also had 11 year olds who were not ready for lessons because they couldn't stay focused. The easiest way to determine if they're ready is to register and come to our Saturday Introductory Singing Class.
It's been said that "if you can talk you can sing." So the easy answer is "yes!" This question is often asked by someone who claims they can't carry a tune. It's true some people seem to be born with the ability to hear and match pitches and some aren't. Like anything else in life, a lot depends on how hard you want to work at it. So if you can't carry a tune, you may have to work harder than the average person to develop the ability to sing. It comes down to how much you really want it.
This is a hard question to answer and here's why. Do you want to sing lullabies to your child at night, or do you want to sing in the Metropolitan Opera? Do you want to sing along with the
radio or win American Idol? There are many levels of singing. Compare it to sports. Do you want to play pick-up basketball at the gym or do you want to play in the NBA? As you can see there
is a lot of room for all levels of singing. But there is a great deal of satisfaction available at every level that can bring you a lifetime of joy and fulfillment.
Do you have an inborn gift for singing? Or do you have talent…which is ability to desire and work at it? There are a lot of gifted singers who never sing. And there are talented singers
without real gifts who work hard and are making millions of dollars singing.
At almost every level it comes down to whether you are willing to practice and work at it every day. If you are, then it won't take you long to see growth and progress. Your desires and
ability to work at it determine how long it will take to make progress. The size of your goals will determine whether it's weeks or years to achieve them. Regardless of how long, the joy
is in the journey!
